Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees or shrubs.

Stems: Stems with latex, pubescence of malpighiaceous hairs.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate/spirally arranged. Margins entire. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescences fascicles or solitary flowers. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx of (4)5 sepals in a single whorl, distinct, imbricate or quincuncial. Corolla shortly tubular or cup–shaped, tube slightly shorter than lobes, lobes 5, erect, entire. Stamens 5, inserted about halfway up corolla tube, included, staminodes 5, inserted between the Stamens in the corolla lobe sinuses. Ovary superior, 5-celled.

Fruit: Fruit globose; glabrous or tomentose; sometimes setose; pericarp thin to thick; sometimes very hard when dry. Seeds 1–5; laterally compressed; scar narrow; adaxial; full–length; embryo vertical; with thin foliaceous cotyledons.
